Bungee Jumping on Cheongpungho Lake!
The work itself aside, this was another exciting week. On Friday morning we headed out on a 6 am bus to Jecheon. The bus schedule there was a bit awkward so we spent a few hours walking around Andong while we waited for our final bus to leave after 10:30 am. While in Andong we did get to try a much-anticipated restaurant, Lotteria. We were told it was like the Korean McDonald's... however we were very misleading and it was honestly quite disappointing. WIth Pepsi only on the menu... I should have known better. When we finally arrived in Jecheon we located our Airbnb and dropped our backpack off on our way towards adventure. From Jecheon we took another hour-long bus ride to Cheongpung Land. The bus system was irregular so we spent a lot of time waiting around but we finally made it!
The beauty!! Cheongpung Land has an assortment of thrilling activities placed right on the edge of Cheongpungho Lake. After taking in the views, we headed down to the activity hub and observed some fellow thrill-seekers doing Bungee Jumping, The Big Swing, and Zip-lining. Brandon was incredibly nervous about the jump and I was very nervous about failing to buy tickets if there was nobody that spoke English. We sat in the sun enjoying the nice weather and finally found the courage to buy tickets. I was so pleased to hear the ticket man ask if we spoke English and we were able to easily buy tickets for both the Big Swing and the Bungee Jump!
We went alone so unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures/videos of us going... but it was an amazing experience! I did steal a video of somebody else doing the Bungee Jump for anybody interested in what it looked like.
They discount the price for the rides if you buy a bundle, so we ended up doing both the Big Swing and the Bungee Jump. The Big Swing was very similar to the "Sky Coaster" at Lagoon if you've ever done that, but it swings you right over the edge of the lake! The Big Swing was so much fun and got us both screaming with the thrill. Once they have raised you to the top of the pulley, you have to pull the release cord to drop you into the swing. We had no idea how hard you would really need to pull so once we got to the top we both started yanking and yanking on the cord but it didn't seem to budge! We both pulled together and finally it let us loose but we were both so surprised that we didn't even realize we had started falling until we started the first 'up-swing' towards the lake. The view was absolutely gorgeous and such a great experience.
The Bungee Jump was absolutely terrifying. We got all suited up and walked to the tower. They took us to the top of the 62 meter tower in the slowest elevator of my life. We walked across the bridge to the end where we would be jumping. There was a beautiful view of the lake and you could feel the bridge sway ever so slightly in the wind. Brandon was the 3rd jumper and I was the 5th so luckily we got to watch a couple of people go before us. Brandon said it was the scariest experience he has ever had in his life but he was really happy that he did it. When I walked up to edge of the platform, the workers told me to step to the edge. I stepped to the edge and the sheer-panic started to set in. I was SO nervous! They told me I needed to step 5 cm over the edge of the grate and I panicked thinking there was no way I could do it. I tried to inch forward but started leaning back a lot and they said, "Stand up straight!". At this point I think they realized I couldnt go any further so they told me to put my hands behind my head and rapidly started counting down, "5, 4, 3, 2, 1!". They pushed me off the edge and there I was, screaming my head off and Bungee Jumping! My head felt like it was going to explode with all of the blood to my head and I started seeing little white dots in my vision. But it was awesome! Such a great experience and I was so thrilled to do it with my best friend. Bungee has been the longest and really only standing item on my bucket list so it was awesome to accomplish it.
After we got back to Jecheon we needed to pick a place to eat. Brandon did some looking on google for places near us and we settled on Gowon Galbi. The pictures looked delicious so we put our brave pants on and tried it out. The people working definitely didn't speak English but they got us a table and we pointed to what we wanted on the menu and it all turned out okay. It was a little nerve-wracking but it was also delicious! We got Marinated Pork Ribs and Kimchi Thin Noodles. In traditional Korean style the meal came with a plethora of sides to try and they grilled the Pork Ribs on a small charcoal grill built into the table. The soup, meat, and sides were all delidious. It felt like a real victory dinner after all of our bravery for the day.
We planned to take the bus back home at 2 pm on Saturday. Having Friday off is excellent because we have a chance to go and spend the night somewhere but still spend all day Sunday at home. Our Airbnb had the game Settler's of Catan so we woke up and played that together before we left. After leaving our accomodation we walked the streets in search of a fancy coffee/breakfast. With some more google image searching we found Roastery Cafe. What a cute spot! The interior had the cutest decorations. Brandon and I shared a Tong-Tong. An absolutely delightful drink that was something like chocolate milk on the bottom filled with frozen ice-cream cubes and whipped cream up top.It was nice to get home and spend our Sunday watching movies. It was a thrilling weekend and an adventure neither of us will be forgetting for a long time!
