We've landed in South Korea!
Better late than never. A motto I really hate but I guess it will have to do. We are quickly approaching Quarantine Day 4 dinner and I just wanted to share a few thoughts, pictures, and things about our first few days in Korea.
The flight was great. Brandon was very nervous about it but it wasn't too bad. We finally had a chance to watch Slumdog Millionaire (Brandon's favorite movie, 3 years into our relationship. It's embarrassing, I know). To both our pleasure and surprise we were served two full meals in-flight (we were worried with the 'Rona's). Bibimbap & chicken/rice or beef/noodles. We had an excellent piece of carrot cake and I am still dreaming about it to this very moment.
Thanks to fabulous support from my TL' s at UPSTART we divided a 40 pack of snacks between the two of us for our flight. I have never been more grateful that I didn't eat those snacks as we are on Day 4 of rice, meat, and odd Korean sidedishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No dessert and no soda/coffee/tea. Water only. It's a tough life but we are hanging in there. We have rationed our snacks and can have 1-2 things a day depending on how dire the situation is. A big shout out to whomever's idea that was; a gift so greatly appreciated you could never know.
Getting off the flight we thought we had made it but were surprised with a 3 hour line/walk through customs and the quarantine formalities. Exiting the plane it was hotter than sin. No amount of talking about the humidity could ever prepare you for the humidity. And the thirst. We had no idea water would be so sparse or else would have prepared ourselves very differently. There were soooo many papers wanting our quarantine address in a tiny little box. In case anybody is interested in what I mean by long: NIIED 191 Jeongjail-ro Bundang-gu Seongnam-si Gyeonggi-do 13557.
We were both exhausted and struggled to stay awake in the taxi to our quarantine facility. We came in right at sunset though and it was incredible. All of the anxiety and fear started to settle because we really made it! We are really doing this!
Brandon & I's room are right next to each other. We mask & glove up at every meal and open our doors at the same time to get just a peek at each other. We have also started a semi-regular routine of quarantine exercise over videochat. I don't like it, but it's nice to get your heart pumping after sitting basically 24/7. Our rooms are very nice. We each have two twin beds, a nice shower, and air conditioning that runs 24/7. We are at the base floor and face a beautiful little garden out back. It rains every day and is nice to see some greenery amidst the florescent lights.
The sleeping schedule is still ridiculously messed up so it's probably a good thing we have a couple of weeks to adjust. I was so proud I stayed up until 12 am last night thinking I would sleep until breakfast at 8:30 but I woke up at 4 am. Again. We'll get the hang of it.
I thought this would be much shorter, alas that pretty much covers our first few days, from my point of view at least. -Claire
